Adorned is a five-day experience of unisex jewellery designed and made by local jeweller David J Lilly.
Works will be on display from the three 2019 collections – Menhir, Chevron and Outline, along with two new collections – Continuum and Luutia. Earrings, pendants, brooches and rings in Sterling Silver, Mokume Gane and precious and semi-precious gems.
“I love seeing you adorned in things you love because you glow.”
It’s not that jewellery adds something to you, I believe that jewellery is an entirely separate entity that engages with the wearer (like everything we choose to wear), for you have chosen to associate yourself with each carefully selected, collected and curated piece. I believe there has to be a symbiotic interaction for you to want to ‘look’ the way you do, because there is for me, and I’m just a different you.
I know I don’t need to really tell you this because you know that how you select what you adorn yourself with is entirely personal. Adorn means to beautify, make attractive, but for me this is symbiotic. Jewellery sitting unworn looks unloved and unwanted unwholly – it’s missing something, so it benefits from us wearing it as much as we get enjoyment out of acquiring and wearing it. We adore our adornment by jewellery, and what we choose to wear can be adored by others, why else would we cultivate that connection. But, offer a piece of your jewellery to someone else and look at how it adorns them, it’s never the same as it cannot connect with them as it does with you. It’s unique, you are unique and so is that relationship between you.
Adorned is about that relationship we have, be we male or female, with adornment and in this case precious metal jewellery. I adore what I create as I create it for me to enjoy. I may not make a ring in my size but the thought of it sitting on someone else’s finger who adores it gives my great joy – to know that what I adore can be adored by another bringing that piece a new life, one I cannot give it.
Wear each piece with pride in yourself and be adored by all who witness your adornment.
David will be working in the gallery designing and making jewellery throughout the exhibition.
