The landscape remains at my centre, particularly where the land meets the sea and wilderness places where the elements erode and shape the land.
My paintings are largely about process and my personal engagement with the subject. This particular subject matter gives me the opportunity to explore the properties of paint and finding the mark making language to explore these surfaces. I feel that manipulating the medium with rags and/or my hand alone, renders a direct connection to the surface.
I also seek to capture the essence of the weather, structures and water through the use of oil, acrylic and inks, building up a visible history of colour and brush marks.
Layering and disturbing the painting surface brings awareness that my interpretation of the landscape is a kind of re-imagining and a re-editing. Inevitably, information will be missing as one recollects a place/space. Just like memory.
