As the summer holidays are coming to an end, September brings a new start, and with that we have just the thing to get you back into the swing of things.
The next edition of our Develop Week will encompass a variety of workshops designed to inspire, share skills and connect with local creatives. This September we’re shining a light on local creatives and projects who received a Creative Commissions small grant from the Adur & Worthing Trust. There will also be workshops and talks facilitated by Shake It Up Creative as well as a workshop and talk that compliments the project and video installation ‘Lost Memories’ by Gary Thomas.

Bring your lunch and start your week by meeting new creative people in Worthing. We will be joined by a selection of our Studio Members; so come along to find out more about their creative practice over your packed lunch, in an informal get together.

Creative Commissions 2024: The Mark We Make
Tuesday 3 September 2024 // 11.00 – 16.00 // Free
Local artists Nora Young and Wendy Palmer along with ‘The Mark You Make’ artists group are inviting everyone to get involved with mark making in their open workshop in the gallery. They will be sharing materials, starting points and influences to explore mark making together and the importance of it as part of the creative process.
Meet local artists, share open conversation and work together to make marks and create images. Nora, Wendy and the group look forward to meeting and sharing their ideas with you.
There’s no need to book, just drop-in and have a go.
Your Creative Rights: Music Licensing & Image Usage
Thursday 5 September 2024 // 10.15 – 17.00 // Free
Join Shake It Up Creative founder Rachael Dines for a full day of fun and informative marketing sessions. The sessions will cover music in marketing, images and the law and will end with bookable 1-2-1s for advice covering marketing, social media, PR, SEO and branding.
Using Music in Marketing // 10.15 – 11.30
Matthew Chapman from Muchas Music and Richard Kirstein from Resilient Music will delve into the use of music in marketing and advertising with a focus on social media. Covering the essentials of music licensing, they will offer guidance on using it safely to promote your business. The session will end with a Q&A.
Use of Images & the Law // 11.45 – 12.45
Samantha Oakley, a commercial lawyer based in Sussex will cover the sometimes heavy topic of the legal use of images in marketing in an easy-to-understand way. Samantha will give an outline of the landscape and issues leaving plenty of time for questions at the end.

Lost Memories: Gary Thomas in Conversation with Rachel Gadsen

Alongside the Lost Memories video installation, you can join Gary Thomas and Rachel Gadsen for an in conversation talk in the gallery. Lost Memories takes you on a journey of what it is to be a carer. Amongst the heartbreaking challenges, Gary also shares wonderful humorous moments and the deep care and love that so many carers like Gary give.
Gary will also be joined by David Parker from Figment Arts who has supported Gary to produce the film, giving you an insight into the making and editing of the film.
Rachel is a British artist who has exhibited internationally, working across the mainstream and disability art sectors.

Writer, Director and Artist Gary Thomas will lead a writing workshop for carers and those with experiences of care.
In the workshop, you will explore useful exercises to de-stress and find creative ways to tell your story and share your experiences through writing.

Our second edition of ‘Creative Talks!’ will feature three local creatives who have recently received Creative Commissions small grants from the Adur & Worthing Trust. Ainoa Burgos Gonzalez, Paul Kemp and Becky Edmunds will speak about their current projects, their creative process and what’s next.
There will also be the opportunity to get involved. Whether you’ve spoken in public before, or you’re up for giving it a go, you’re welcome to join in and have a go at talking about your creative practice and process. Each speaker will have 15 minutes.

Creative Commissions 2024: Charlotte Petts: Stories from the Lido

Audio creator Charlotte Petts has captured the stories of regular visitors to one of Worthing’s last traditional seaside cafes, The Lido. Join Charlotte in the gallery to hear the stories, have a go at creating your own zine and share your own memories of Worthing’s seaside history.
Drop in anytime between 14.00 & 16.00. Refreshments will be provided.
