Alluvium

Alluvium is what water leaves behind. Carried down from hills and riverbanks, held in suspension, then set down where the current slows: silt, sediment, clay. Ground made by movement.
In this duo exhibition, Michael Lainchbury and Peon Boyle bring ceramics and drawing together around that quiet act of deposit. Clay once carried by running water is gathered, shaped by hand and given to fire. What emerges is no longer riverbed or bank. It is transformed into a new being, made through heat and patience.
Every known living thing on Earth is made of water. It moves through us and through the land, shaping us as it shapes the land.
Boyle presents drawing scrolls inspired by the flow of fluid, made with rain and sea, marks that pool, thin, run and settle at the touch of water. Alongside them, Lainchbury’s closed-form ceramic sculptures hold the memory of touch. Fired in a gas kiln, some are finished with marks of carbon, others with the chemical reactions of glaze. Side by side, the two disciplines explore emotion and material.
Alluvium is not a landscape of rivers. It is a conversation between two makers, two materials and two elements, offered with honesty and a little humility. Come and stand where the current slows and see what as settled.
