I can’t stop drawing…

13th – 17th December 2016

Tues to Sat – 10am to 5pm

Michelle Dawson’s images are packed full of energy, her witty line guides your eye around her keenly observed drawings of coastal structures and seaside life. A charming and finely detailed style of reportage allows any viewer of her work to see Sussex in an exciting new way. In her own words, Michelle explains her artistic background and why she loves to draw Worthing and the surrounding area:

“I am an Artist, Illustrator and Tutor and I have lived in Worthing for the last 14 years.
I completed a degree in Illustration at Bath Spa University College before training to be an Art Teacher at the University of Brighton. I then taught Art at a local secondary school for many years before taking some time out to raise my family.”

“I now run art classes for adults and complete illustration commissions as well as drawing as much as I can.”

“I love sketching the seaside scenes of Worthing, Hove and Brighton. I like to capture all the little details in a scene such as lamp posts, beach huts, flags and street signs, as well as people walking by.”

Michelle’s title for her show: “I can’t stop drawing” … appears to be part humorous admission, part declaration about the power of drawing. She suggests that by recording life though drawing, dedicating oneself to it, sharing that passion and not allowing yourself to stop, one can discover something beyond the page.

“When the weather’s not so good or I’m unable to get out I also enjoy making small drawings of natural objects from observation at home. I believe that drawing is very good for you. I find that if I make time in my day to draw I feel more energised and focused as a result.”

“I love to share my enthusiasm for drawing with others and I run a monthly sketching class ‘Seafront Sketchers’. We visit different inspiring locations in Worthing, learn new skills and sketch out and about together. I also run workshops for particular skills such as dip-pen and ink and watercolour, as well as a five session drawing course. You can find more details of these on the workshops page of my website www.michelledawson.co.uk “

Michelle has developed a series of limited edition prints from her favourite sketches and these will be on display and for sale during the exhibition. Members of the public will also have the opportunity to see Michelle at work.
