The Mailart displayed in this exhibition has been collected by Lee Jackson, a local poet, over the last decade.
Lee’s own Mailart contributions are sent in the form of Tanka poetry booklets. The poems are a contemporary take on the ancient art of Waka poetry writing and are visual sketches about his travels, and the people and wildlife who inhabit the Adur & Worthing district.
What is Mailart?
Mailart began in the 1960s when artists started to send postcards inscribed with poems or drawings through the post rather than exhibiting or selling them through conventional commercial channels.
Media commonly used in Mailart include postcards, paper, a collage of found or recycled images and objects, rubber stamps, and paint, but can also include music, sound art, poetry, or anything that can be put into an envelope and sent in the post. Mailart is considered art as soon as it has been sent.
