John Shelley returns to Colonnade House with “Clowns, Scarecrows & Other Icons”.
Following a successful exhibition last year, acclaimed artist John Shelley returns to Colonnade House in Worthing with a bold new collection: Clowns, Scarecrows and Other Icons.
Known for his distinctive style and ability to merge whimsy with psychological depth, Shelley’s latest works explore the symbolism of characters both playful and eerie, familiar yet unsettling. Through this series, he invites viewers to question the roles these figures play in culture and memory – archetypes that oscillate between charm and menace.
The exhibition will feature a number of compelling new pieces, including “Clown Alley”, a haunting yet humorous interpretation of a neighbouring street teeming with theatrical nostalgia, and “Redundant Scarecrow”, a poignant portrayal of obsolescence and solitude in rural landscapes. Another standout, “Scuttling of Spiders and the Admiral of Graf Spee”, blends surrealism with history, conjuring strange narratives from seemingly unrelated imagery.
Speaking ahead of the show, Shelley said “These works emerged from an exploration of childhood recollections, dream logic, and the curious figures that linger in our collective subconscious. There’s humour in them – but also a lingering shadow”.
Shelley’s 2024 exhibition drew wild acclaim, with visitors praising his detailed, imaginative compositions and the emotional resonance they evoked. This year’s return promises an equally engaging experience, packed with evocative imagery, rich storytelling, and thought-provoking themes.
