Marko (aka Mark Wheatley) is a Worthing-based artist and independent publisher of prints and zines, producing bold and graphic artworks exploring form, colour and composition.
Marko’s artwork encompasses a variety of working methods including painting, sculpture, zine making, textiles and printmaking with a particular focus on screen printing. Central to all these working methods is the act of play. Play enables an engagement in the moment, relying on intuition and most importantly allowing a sense of freedom to explore processes and techniques. Marko strives towards simplicity and directness, blurring the line between childlikeness and sophistication.
Using the screen print process, Marko works with hand cut paper stencils, allowing for a spontaneous and improvised way of working. The paper cut method creates flat, even colour and provides opportunities to explore bold graphic shapes in playfully constructed compositions. He finds the process intriguing and enjoys working with limitations. Using these hand produced methods draws his attention to the fundamentals of colour, form and texture. Marko’s work explores a balance of order and improvisation; some aspects of his practice are planned and a certain amount is due to spontaneity and feeling. He finds that the tension between these two opposites makes the creative process interesting.
‘Loooook’ is an exhibition of some of Marko’s creative outpourings from the last two years, bringing together a range of screen prints, woodcuts and 3D work. Come and have a loooook!
