Michelle is an Artist and Educator based in Worthing and she is excited to reveal to you some of the paintings she has been making in her new garden studio over the last year.
Michelle loves to mix a variety of materials together, including coloured pencils, pastels, acrylic paints and inks. Her sketchbooks are where she finds out how different materials behave together and she has learnt so much within these pages. She enjoys the unpredictable nature of ink and wash and the vivid colours and scribbly marks you can achieve with crayons and coloured pencils. She loves the happy accidents when layering contrasting materials together and likes to place marks with different qualities next to each other.
Michelle has been finding inspiration in the hills at Cissbury Ring and the shores of Sussex and
Cornwall in the last few months. The South Downs are such an exhilirating undulating landscape compared to the flat land nearer the shore. Her flowing sketches made at Cissbury have led to flowing mixed-media paintings, rapid marks with ink pencils contrast with lush inky washes to evoke this fascinating area.
A trip to Cornwall in February provided inspiration for a new Cornish harbour painting – Michelle loves to paint sweeps of sea and seaside cottages climbing up the hills behind.
Michelle has drawn and painted many views of Worthing over the last few years and these popular illustrated seaside scenes will be available to buy as prints and cards.
Michelle will be drawing and painting during her time at the gallery so come along to meet her and watch her at work! You can also find out about her upcoming programme of drawing and painting workshops and the clubs she runs for primary school children.
