Piers Ottey: Composition and Culture
Much of Piers Ottey’s painting is a result of his love of travel, both at home in the UK and abroad. He has painted from the mountains of Switzerland to the grand cityscapes of San Francisco, London (where he was born and raised) and West Sussex where he has lived since 1980. Recent visits to Singapore, New Zealand and the coast of Cornwall have resulted in an arresting new body of work engaging dramatic natural compositions and cultures.
Whatever the subject, the work produced is concerned with colour as well as the relationship between natural space and flat surface geometry. The mystery of putting colour down on a flat surface to ‘represent’ a view of often great depth without creating a copy of what he sees is central to Piers’ unique vision and to his identity as a contemporary painter. With a career spanning over fifty years, Piers continues to paint what really matters to him; his children, his beloved dog Audrey, his motorbikes and his regular life-models are amongst these.
