Sketch Worthing

The competition and exhibition ‘Sketch Worthing’ aims to promote the diversity and importance of drawing and the role of the sketchbook in contemporary creative practice. This is a community based project with a competition result, drawing together creatives and budding sketchbook lovers and creators in Adur & Worthing.

‘Sketch Worthing’ is not intended to be a survey of the sketchbook, but to generate creative process’ and provide a unique platform for debate. The sketchbook is a place for experiments alongside the ordinary and the observed. Viewing them can be a journey through the most intimate studio space of the artist.

This competition is an open call for anyone over the age of 18 to submit a sketchbook with any theme or medium of their choice. The final selection of winners will be made by collaborating artists Nicky Bell, Shona Macdonald and another guest (someone of note locally). Selected work will be exhibited to the public at Colonnade House from 17 – 22 September 2019, and there will be a closing party and prize giving event at the gallery on 21 September (15.00 – 17.00). During the exhibition there will also be a ‘community sketchbook’ on display where members of the public are invited to contribute sketches during their visit.

The project should encourage the local community to love and respect what we have locally by exploring another’s observations. You don’t need to be a full-time artist to create wonderful works of art or beautiful sketch books as a pastime. This project will endeavour to broaden the horizons of the budding sketch-booker and encourage the people of the local area and beyond to engage with the process.
