Southdowns Creative Stitchers (formerly Worthing Tuesday Embroiderers Guild).
2026 marks “50 years of stitch” from our beginnings in September 1976 as the Worthing Branch of the Embroiderer’s Guild to becoming an independent stitch group in 2021, known as Southdowns Creative Stitchers (SCS).
SCS incorporates our origins in traditional embroidery, as well as sharing the fun of trying new ideas, techniques and products. Our main monthly meeting often features well known embroiderers sharing their story and techniques whilst our smaller monthly subgroups give the opportunity to delve deeper. There are groups specialising in traditional hand embroidery, contemporary mixed media trying new materials and techniques in textile art, and our long running “workshop” group which works on various collective projects.
Workshop group started with the task of making ‘The Worthing Embroidery’, a huge wall hanging commissioned for Worthing Hospital, being part of an ‘Art in Hospitals’ project, representing the townscapes, sea, beach, countryside, flora and fauna and landmark buildings of our beloved town. So many projects have been stitched since those days, from large collective embroideries of the town now at Worthing Museum to community makes such as heart cushions for Worthing Hospital Breast Clinic.
Our latest group project on display here in our 50th anniversary exhibition, is a crazy quilt inspired by the beautiful Victorian Jubilee quilt we saw on a visit to Worthing Museum, with patches sewn by all members. It is a celebration of our 50 Years of Stitch and the skills of our members. Around the walls you will find individual pieces by many of our members.
In celebrating our Jubilee we look forward to many more years of stitch, chat, teaching and inspiration.
