TALES OF TWO CITIES – AN EXPLORATION OF DUALITY BY TWO PHOTOGRAPHERS
MATT HUMPHREY + BRYONY SHEARMUR
Each with their own distinct practice and approach these two photographers weave multiple narratives into unique visual storytelling.
For Matt Humphrey an analog process of shooting blended 35mm film allows him to portray a tangible sense of ‘limbo’ – a feeling of being in two places at once. These black and white frames come directly from the rolls of film that he captured in and around Worthing over the two year period that the artist resided here.
Layered stories and evocative scenes come together in these merged narratives that fuse the left side of the frame with the right. There is no constant here – these frames live in ethereal moments that challenge our concepts of time and space – and what we have come to understand about what photography represents.
This BLENDED body of work was inspired by the artist’s exploration of the duality of mental health – a visual representation of their own journey.
After 25 years living in Los Angeles, London born visual artist and photographer Bryony Shearmur has returned to England with her latest body of work “Hollywoodland”.
Hollywoodland is an intimate and insightful portrait of her adopted city, The images, originally intended as a purely personal project, were shot over a twenty year period Bryony describes them as visual graffiti
She says “I began what became Hollywoodland as an antidote to other aspects of my life at the time, I needed a project with no rules and no intended outcome, these were quick and dirty shoot-from-the-hip moments.”
The twenty year archive put together as diptychs tell the untold story of a city and her people. It documents a period of time seen through the unique lens of a resident outsider. Each pairing tells a short story, sometimes poetic, sometimes funny, always honest.
