Meet Nora Young
This year we’re celebrating 10 years of Colonnade House and will be sitting down with 10 artists to hear all about their creative practices. From painters, illustrators, sculptors and more, each artist is just one of the many who have been a part of Colonnade House over the years.
We sat down with Nora Young to hear all about how she creates.
What Colonnade House has given me is the opportunity to, number one, to realise that artists want to talk about process.
I’ve always been really interested in process, in the marks, the random bits you pick up, the views you constantly return to, all of the things that influence our work. I thought it was just me, but actually through the mark makers group, I’ve come to realise – I sort of think I had an inkling, probably through showing here and spending time with my work in a space that’s given me the opportunity to hang it in the way that I want, with help, but I realise through coming and exhibiting my work here and finding that the opportunity to have conversations with other artists was definitely welcome.
I think that led on to us applying for the grant from the Adur & Worthing Trust. Wendy Palmer and myself, another artist who exhibits here, led us to set up Mark Makers which has gone on to become a really lively group where people share all the time. We’ve been able at Colonnade House to meet regularly, and just enjoy the process, not end products and also to gain experience from each others processes, feeling supported by Colonnade, being recognised and welcomed, is huge when you’re feeling unsure about your work, when you’re feeling much on your own, in your own space and it’s possible for people to be able to realise their ambition and it is ok to be an artist, it isn’t weird, it is alright to give your time to it.
