Meet Steven Bloomer
This year we’re celebrating 10 years of Colonnade House and will be sitting down with 10 artists to hear all about their creative practices. From painters, illustrators, sculptors and more, each artist is just one of the many who have been a part of Colonnade House over the years.

Can you tell us a little bit about what you do?
I’m the head of art at Durrington High School, I’ve been there for twenty years and I teach textiles, photography, and as part of the school we do fine art and graphics as well.
What made you want to exhibit at Colonnade House?
We’ve done it for a few years now, and I just think it’s a brilliant opportunity for students to see their work in a professional setting, it’s good for the general public, it’s good for the parents. It’s a fab space to exhibit the work.
What do the students enjoy most about exhibiting at Colonnade House?
It’s more professional, it’s on display for the local community, it’s really aspirational for the students to exhibit in a professional setting.
Tell us about some of the artwork in the exhibition.
This is Peggy Lee’s work, she does textiles and it’s a stitch portrait projct. The technique is reverse applique. She was looking at an artist called Alana de Haines for the decorative, linear aspects of it and then she uses embroidery techniques, quilting, using different techniques like plastics, foils, and newspaper to add even more detail and more texture to the work.
This piece is really impressive, this is Kerry’s work, she’s worked really hard, she’s so motivated and dedicated to the course, she’s really put her whole soul into it.
