BPF18 Artist in Residence opportunity provides the time and space for an artist to research and create a new project of work, culminating in an exhibition at Colonnade House in Worthing during BPF18.
The artist will have access to a network of peers and mentors during the residency and in turn the artist will be given the opportunity to mentor students in photography at the Northbrook Metropolitan College in Worthing during autumn 2018.
The residency, which will take place this summer, will give the selected artist the opportunity to make a new body of work about Worthing. A small production budget will be available and the work will be exhibited in the larger of the two spaces at Colonnade House. The Artist in Residence will be given mentor support by BPF staff. During September 2018, the artist will also have access to the impressive production facilities and dark rooms at Northbrook Metropolitan College.
There will be a £1,000 fee for the selected artist and a £1,000 production budget.
The brief for the residency is entirely open in terms of the kind of work produced. We only ask that the work produced is inspired by or relates to Worthing in some way and that it engages with our mission to develop new ways of seeing together.
Alongside producing work, the artist will be given the opportunity to give tutorials to photography students at Northbrook College during the autumn term 2018. Through these tutorials, the artist can work with students at Northbrook College to develop a small curated group show at Colonnade House in the smaller of the two spaces alongside the main exhibition or devise with them an interactive project that can engage passers-by in this side gallery. The artist will also be given the opportunity to engage with the community in Worthing and at Colonnade House in talks during the residency and the exhibition.
Any teaching at Northbrook Met College will be paid additionally and the artist must be available for two days w/c 17 September and 15 October 2018. Exact dates TBC.
Brighton Photo Fringe
Brighton Photo Fringe has successfully delivered biennial, city-wide festivals in Brighton since 2003. This year, BPF is expanding along the coast both east and west, to Hastings and Worthing. In Worthing, alongside this month-long exhibition at Colonnade House, BPF will invite local artists to self-curate exhibitions in pop-up venues around the town.
Colonnade House – Creative Hub
One of Worthing’s most iconic architectural landmarks, Colonnade House is located in the heart of Worthing’s vibrant cafe quarter. In 2016 Colonnade House was transformed into a unique creative workspace and hub that fosters cross-disciplinary inspiration and collaboration. Colonnade House has two street level exhibition spaces with large, street level windows looking out on to the busy pedestrianised road.
Northbrook Metropolitan College
Northbrook Metropolitan College is part of the Greater Brighton Metropolitan College, created from the merger of City College Brighton and Northbrook College Sussex. Based west of Worthing centre, Northbrook hosts an impressive photography department, attracting students to a three-year BA programme run by Kirste McCool.
