Becky Edmunds: Those Forgotten

Becky Edmunds: Those Forgotten

Experimental embroidery artist Becky Edmunds will ask residents of Adur & Worthing to donate old photographs of unknown individuals. She’ll choose up to 10 of these photographs and transform them into modern artworks using thread, which will be exhibited in Autumn 2024.

About

In the archives of many families, there are old photographs capturing the faces of long-deceased people. While some of these people are easily recognised and cherished, others remain mysterious, their identities lost to time. These portraits of strangers are kept in attics & drawers, disconnected from anyone who knows who they are, yet hard to throw away.

Becky will choose between 10 – 15 photographs, and using embroidery thread, transform them into contemporary artworks which will be exhibited for 12 weeks at Worthing Museum & Gallery from October 2024 – January 2025. Those who donate a photograph will have the opportunity to share their stories with Becky, shedding light on how these photographs came into their possession. Collaborating with sound designer Scott Smith, these recorded conversations will be woven into a soundscape to enhance the gallery experience, putting the voices of the participants at the heart of the experience. After the exhibition, the now embroidered photographs will be returned to their owners, giving them an original artwork to enjoy for years to come.

Three workshops will introduce photo-embroidery to participants, sharing skills & inspiration to enable them to create their own photo-embroidery works. Participants will be invited to display the works they make within the final exhibition.
