We’ve had a wonderfully busy start to the year at Colonnade House and the past few months have been hectic with new exhibitions and events taking place. Our studios, home to a mix of talented creatives have been as busy as ever and we were pleased to squeeze in some time to find out what they’ve been up to. We’ve also had some big news recently so make sure to read on to find out what’s in store for our busy gallery and studios below…

It feels like summer has finally arrived and August is the month for photography as we share exhibitions from not one but three local photographers. We also have paintings, textiles and illustration making its way to the gallery walls.

Steve Gallagher: Looking Closer
Exhibition // Until 31 August // 10.00 – 17.00

Sharing a selection of his intimate floral studies and dynamic seascapes, Steve Gallagher is inviting you to take a moment to pause, take a step closer and spend some time enjoying the beauty of the world around us.

During his time in the gallery, Steve will also be debuting a new series of work, titled ‘americana’ where he revisits scenes from his childhood that celebrate the landscapes and heritage of the American Midwest.

You can see more of Steve’s work on his website and Instagram.

Queer Creatives
Barry Falk & Paul Kemp: HOME
Exhibition // 13 – 18 August // 10.00 – 17.00

Uniting under the theme of Home, photographers Barry Falk and Paul Kemp will be sharing their individual bodies of work that share common themes of memory, nostalgia and belonging.

Barry Falk will be sharing his project ‘The Circle‘ which begins with a return to his hometown after a forty-year gap. Paul Kemp’s work has grown from a desire to connect with his new hometown of Worthing in his project ‘Worthing A Portrait of a Town‘. Paul has spent his time traversing the town, meeting the locals and capturing portraits along with details that make Worthing what it is.

Throughout their time in the gallery, both Paul and Barry will be holding free workshops to get involved with. Find out more about what they’ll be getting up to here.

John Shelley
Jan Barnett: Miscellany
Exhibition // 20 – 25 August // 10.00 – 17.00

Inspired by her life, both past and present, Jan Barnett will be showing an eclectic mix of paintings that focus on the intricate details and landscapes of seaside towns. Transport yourself into Jan’s paintings that have been inspired by Worthing’s off-season architecture.

Jan often stops to capture photographs of scenes and details that catch her eye, working from her studio in Ferring, Jan then develops some of these into paintings.

Pete Reilly: Portraits & Pop Art
Urszula Kasza: Inspiration & Detail
Exhibition // 20 – 25 August // 10.00 – 17.00

Urszula Kasza is hoping to inspire visitors to the gallery to pick up their paintbrushes and begin making art in her latest exhibition. Inspired by the world around her, her travels abroad and food and drink, Urszula’s attention to detail can be seen in her drawings of famous people and more recently her holidays to Italy that have been recreated in oil paintings.

This will be Urszula’s second exhibition at Colonnade House. She was also one of the selected artists in the Worthing Museum & Art Gallery Open. You’ll be able to enjoy Urszula’s work in the gallery for one week.

Pete Reilly: Portraits & Pop Art
Sarah Trowsdale: Never Cease to Throw Rocks
Exhibition // 27 August – 01 September // 10.00 – 17.00

Since Sarah’s work in progress exhibition in February, she has brought together established and new textile techniques to construct a series of quilted pieces. Beginning with cultural and historical research which explores little known women throughout history, Sarah aims to bring these forgotten women and their stories to light, representing them through her textile work.

Inspired by a quote from a soldiers’ letter which read “Never cease to throw rocks, and do injury to the troops” Sarah felt that it shared similar importance now as it did then. “The struggle for equality still goes on, but never cease to stand up for your rights, continue to throw your ‘rocks’ until you are heard”.

You can find out more about Sarah and what inspires her work on her website and Instagram.

Leigh Curtis: People in Cars
John Hamilton: The Art of Classic & Performance Cars
Exhibition // 27 August – 01 September // 10.00 – 17.00

Lifelong petrol head John Hamilton will be stepping into the gallery for his first exhibition at Colonnade House. Sharing his love for classic and performance cars, John will share how he creates his drawings, capturing the essence of these classics digitally.

John has showcased his work at other exhibitions including, The Royal Automobile Club at Pall Mall, the Shelsley Walsh Exhibition of Speed, and the Motoring Literary & Art Festival at Silverstone.
