The next edition of Develop Week at Colonnade House will host a variety of workshops designed to inspire, share skills & connect with local creatives.

This September we’re shining a light on local creatives & projects who received a Creative Commission small grant from the Adur & Worthing Trust. There will also be workshops & talks facilitated by Shake It Up Creative as well as; a workshop that compliments the project & video installation by Gary Thomas; Lost Memories.

The week programme will give you the opportunity to discover more about creative projects in our town, how you can get involved, and learn something new to develop your creative practice.

Creative Commissions 2024: The Mark We Make

Tuesday 3 September 2024 // 11.00 – 16.00 // Free

On Tuesday 3 September you can join Nora Young and Wendy Palmer and ‘The Mark You Make’ group of local artists who will be exploring and collecting marks and maybe making images. From 11.00 – 16.00 they will be sharing with each other materials, starting points and influences, and will be working together to explore mark making.

Come and meet them, see what’s going on, maybe join the chat.

As David Hockney says ‘we constantly move through the landscape – you move / you walk – you see the marks – I wanted the marks’.

Nora, Wendy and the group look forward to meeting you and sharing their ideas and marks.

Artyface: Community Art Workshop for Worthing Railway Station

Using Music in Marketing // 10.15 – 11.30 

Matthew Chapman from Muchas Music and Richard Kirstein from Resilient Music will delve into the use of music in marketing and advertising with a focus on social media platforms. Navigating the music licensing landscape can be challenging, especially in our ever-evolving creative industries. Content creators and businesses need to market themselves without the fear of takedown notices or legal issues. Matthew and Richard will cover the essentials of music licensing and offer guidance on how to use music safely and effectively to promote your business.  There will be time built in for Q&A’s.

Use of Images & the Law // 11.45 – 12.45 

Samantha Oakley, a respected commercial lawyer based in Sussex will cover, the sometimes very heavy, topic of the legal use of images in marketing, in an easy to understand way.  Samantha will give the audience an outline of the landscape and issues and will then have plenty of time to answer specific individual questions.

Gary Thomas & Rachel Gadsen

Lost Memories: Gary Thomas in Conversation with Rachel Gadsen

Rachel is a British artist who is exhibited internationally and who works across the mainstream and disability art sectors, presenting cross-cultural visual dialogues that consider the most profound notions of what it is to be human

Rachel says, “Gary’s honest and at times heart wrenching story gives the audience such a powerful insight into the full challenges of being a carer to his Mother.

The Lost Memories film takes you on a journey of what it is to be a carer, but amongst the heart breaking challenges Gary also shares wonderful humorous moments, dancing, and the deep care and love so many carers like Gary give.”

Gary will also be joined by David Parker from Figment Arts who has supported Gary to produce the film, and they will give us an insight into the making and editing of the film.

Lost Memories: Writing Workshop

Saturday 7 September 2024 // 11.30 – 12.30 // Free

Writer, Director and Artist Gary Thomas will lead a writing workshop for carers and those with experiences of care. Gary Thomas’ exhibition Lost Memories will precede this workshop.

A multi-screen video installation, LOST MEMORIES, draws on Gary’s experience of being a carer to his mother who has Alzheimer’s Disease. Mixing documentary phone footage with fictional sequences, Gary seeks to convey the texture of lives that revolve around the confusion of dementia and the demands of caring, as well as the moments of clarity and joy that frequently punctuate it.

In the workshop we will explore useful exercises to de-stress and creative ways to tell your story and share your experiences through writing.

Creative Talks! with Ainoa Burgos Gonzalez, Paul Kemp & Becky Edmunds

Our second edition of ‘Creative Talks!’ features 3 local creatives who have recently received Creative Commissions small grants funding from The Adur & Worthing Trust. Ainoa, Paul & Becky will be talking about their current projects, their creative process & what’s next.

Ainoa Burgos Gonzalez: Plastic Era

Ainoa is a multidisciplinary artist who encompasses sculpture, photography, installation and performance within her creative work. This new project looks at the relationship between humans, plastic and the environment.

Paul Kemp: Home

Paul Kemp’s work grew from a push to connect with his new home of Worthing. Using his camera as a visual device he set out to explore and discover his local surroundings. Paul has traversed the area, seeking to capture the infinite details of place and the particular features that make Worthing.

Becky Edmunds: Those Forgotten

Experimental embroidery artist Becky Edmunds will ask residents of Adur & Worthing to donate old photographs of unknown individuals. She’ll choose up to 10 of these photographs and transform them into modern artworks using thread, which will be exhibited in Autumn 2024.

You can also get involved; Whether you’ve spoken in public many times or up for giving it a go – each speaker has 15 minutes to talk about their projects, practice & process.

Worthing Lido

Creative Commissions 2024: Charlotte Petts: Stories from the Lido

Sunday 8 September 2024 // 14.00 – 16.00 // Free 

Using the Lido Cafe as a source of inspiration, audio creator Charlotte Petts has captured the stories of the regular visitors to one of Worthing’s last traditional seaside cafes. Run by the charming Karl, this cafe is used by many as a place of refuge – offering community and affordable prices. From her visits Charlotte has created an audio piece and a ‘zine in collaboration with Bridget Prince. Come join us to listen to the stories, create your own ‘zine page and share your memories of Worthing’s seaside history.

Drop in anytime 2 – 4pm. Tea and coffee provided (and maybe the odd French Fancy!)
