10 exciting local creative projects receive funding from Adur & Worthing Trust in 2023

Twelve local artists and community groups have received funding from the 2024 Creative Commissions small grant scheme run by Adur and Worthing Trust. These projects will take place throughout the year, across Adur and Worthing, ranging from sound and animation, textile and photography, to dance, music and more.

Now in its seventh round of grant-making, this year’s Creative Commissions attracted a high number of varied applications and the successful bids demonstrate the sheer variety of creative people and talent in the area.

The aim of Creative Commissions is to highlight the diversity of talent that exists in Adur & Worthing, to support ideas that the public can enjoy and to support local creatives. The full list of projects to look forward to this year is…

Ainoa Burgos Gonzalez: Plastic Era

Ainoa is a multidisciplinary artist who encompasses sculpture, photography, installation and performance within her creative work. This new project looks at the relationship between humans, plastic and the environment. Ainoa will be hosting; litter picks & experimental photography workshops which then culminate in an exhibition.

 

 

Sustainability Through Children's Voices
Becky Edmunds: Those Forgotten

“Those Forgotten” Experimental embroidery artist Becky Edmunds will ask residents of Adur & Worthing District to donate old photographs of unknown individuals. She’ll choose up to 10 of these photographs and transform them into modern artworks using thread, which will be exhibited in Worthing in Autumn 2024.

Charlotte Petts: Stories from the Lido

Using the Lido Cafe as a source of inspiration, audio creator Charlotte Petts, will be capturing the stories resulting in three audio pieces and a zine produced in collaboration with Bridget Prince.

Worthing Dance & Music Trail

During Worthing Festival 2024; A unique immersive trail across 4 venues in Worthing; showcasing local dance & music performances. Featuring; artists, Violinists, Belly & Salsa dancers and DJ’s, this is the perfect opportunity to explore the creativity of Worthing Town Centre.

Worthing Dementia Hub: Choir
CREW: RE-loved Worthing Style

In the age of fast fashion and significant failure of efficient textile recycling, this project is a challenge for local people of all ages and abilities to upcycle items of clothing, revamping them and adding style and showing that Adur and Worthing are at the creative forefront of making a difference to the climate emergency.

The Call to Care

Local Alzheimer’s Carers Support Group (Crisp) with the support editor Sarah Garrett who is a professional editor and GB award-winning writer, Lucy Flannery, are producing a script & play that highlights those living with Alzheimers, their carers & support networks. The performance will be a dramatic experience for audiences, with script readings taking place in libraries in Adur & Worthing.

Jimmy Devlin: Jade, Rhonda, Rani
The Mark You Make

Local artist Nora Young will be working with ceramicist Wendy Palmer to share their love of mark making. Activity will take place during meetings at the beach, collaborations with sound artist Steve Whitford & local exhibition visits. The project will end with a celebration of the work produced at Heene Community Centre.

Paul Kemp & Barry Falk: The Cirlce & Worthing: A Portrait of a Town

Two local photographers working in collaboration looking at documenting a specific location. Barry Falk’s work, looking at his family’s connection to an area in London, and Paul Kemp’s work documenting different aspects of Worthing. This project will be free to view & workshops to take part at Colonnade House in August 2024.

50 Years: A Celebration of Old Shoreham

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Old Shoreham Conservation Area, the Friends of Old Shoreham (FOldS) group together with the Friends of St Nicholas Church to develop an art exhibition and map to celebrate the half century milestone.

Sam Harper Holding: Sound in Motion

As part of Creative Waves’ Art in Motion project, Sam will work with 6 local young creatives to produce short animated films which will be released online and via QR codes in locations in Worthing & Adur, including: Worthing Pier, Brooklands Park & Worthing Library.

Drumheads: Worthing Festival

Kicking off Worthing Festival 2024 in style!

Taking place on Worthing Seafront on the opening weekend of this year’s festival; a collaborative event combining local gospel choir, Spring into Soul, two local dance troupes & Samba Drum Heads. Get ready to make some noise!

Stephen Page: Reconnection

Writer Stephen Page is creating new opportunities for Worthing based writers & poets to connect. With support from Creatives Across Sussex, Stephen will work with voice actors, sound recordists & composers to convert his body of work into audio files with planned presentations at local literary festivals & recorded ‘talking books’.
